Trenchless methods
Sewer line replacement in Atlanta
Not every sewer line can be rebuilt from inside. When a Atlanta lateral has caved in, flattened or sunk out of grade, it is replaced, and in most cases that replacement still does not require a trench across the yard or the street.

When a line is replaced instead of lined
A liner can rebuild a pipe that still has a shape and a slope. Beyond that point the lateral is replaced. In Atlanta the cases are familiar: pre-war terracotta that a water oak root ball has lifted and broken into pieces; Orangeburg from a 1960s tract that has collapsed to an oval and will not pass a camera; cast iron under a slab with the bottom rusted out for most of its run; a belly where red clay settled under a section and left a low spot that holds solids after every use; a PVC lateral crushed where a driveway or an addition was built over it; or a four-inch line serving a house that has grown to a size it was never meant to drain. A good contractor shows you the footage and explains why a liner would simply cast the problem in resin.
Trenchless replacement by bursting
Pipe bursting is how most laterals in the metro are replaced today. From a pit near the house and a second near the main, a cable is run through the old pipe, a conical bursting head larger than the pipe is pulled through, and the fragments of the old line are pushed outward into the clay while a fused length of high-density polyethylene follows the head along the same path. The new pipe has no joints, cannot rust and is immune to roots, and it can be upsized at the same time. The yard, driveway and sidewalk between the pits are not disturbed, which matters doubly in parts of the metro where a trench would hit granite within a few feet. the verified installer replacing lines in Atlanta performs bursting and other replacement work across metro Atlanta and north Georgia.
Where a short trench still makes sense
Open-cut replacement has not disappeared; it has been narrowed to where it fits. A shallow run through a lawn with no rock and no pavement above it, a short connection at the foundation where the pipe exits a crawlspace, a lateral whose route needs to move to avoid a new structure, or a tap at the main that the utility requires its own crew to make are all cases where a few feet of trench is quicker and simpler than setting up a bursting rig. The comparison at the CIPP reference is a good guide to where each approach belongs. A contractor should be able to make that case in either direction with the footage in hand.
The camera decides, the proposal explains
Every replacement decision in Fulton County should trace back to a recorded inspection. The video shows the defect and its footage; the sonde gives its depth; the finding names the pipe material and the failure. The proposal then names the method for each segment, the pipe going in, the pit or trench locations, the permits required and the schedule. You should see the footage that rules out lining before you accept a replacement price, and you should receive the post-installation video before final payment. A proposal that skips those steps is asking you to take the diagnosis on faith.
Permits, utility locating and the public way
Replacement work needs a plumbing permit from the city or county building department, and any pit, trench or connection in the sidewalk or street needs a right-of-way permit with traffic control as the jurisdiction requires. Underground utilities are located and marked before the first shovel. Who owns the lateral is not uniform: in the central city the owner is on the hook to the main, and in some suburban counties the utility maintains the portion in the right-of-way. The contractor confirms the rule for Atlanta, then handles the permit filings, the inspections and the coordination with the sewer utility at the tie-in. In the oldest in-town areas, where a federal consent decree governs sewer overflows, utilities take an active interest in laterals that have been letting groundwater into the system, and a documented replacement is welcome.
What comes with the new line
The replaced lateral arrives with a camera recording of the finished pipe, a written description of what was installed and where, the permit records, and a warranty from the installer. A new cleanout at the house is standard, and on a low-lying lot a backwater valve is often added at the same time to keep a surcharged main from backing into the house during a summer storm. Keep the package with the house records. The installers listed at the verified installer directory are expected to deliver all of it on every replacement.

Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement
How can I tell if my line needs replacing rather than lining?+
You cannot from the surface; the camera can. A pipe that still has its round shape and its downhill slope is lined. A pipe with a collapsed section, a long belly holding water, Orangeburg gone flat or a diameter too small for the house is replaced. The inspection footage and the written finding should show you which case you are in.
Does replacement mean digging up the yard?+
Usually not. Pipe bursting replaces the lateral along its existing path through two small pits, one near the house and one near the property line or the main. A trench is reserved for short, shallow sections that are easy to reach, for a lateral whose route has to change, or for a connection the utility insists on making itself.
What kind of pipe is used for a replacement in Atlanta?+
Fused high-density polyethylene for bursting, a single jointless length that flexes with the clay and resists roots and corrosion. For an open-cut replacement, schedule 40 PVC with solvent-welded joints is the usual choice. Both carry a warranty and are documented with a post-installation camera run.
Who is responsible for the lateral out to the main?+
It depends on the jurisdiction. In the central city the owner is responsible for the full lateral, including the length under the sidewalk and street; some suburban counties maintain the portion in the public right-of-way. The contractor confirms the rule for Atlanta before anything is quoted, so the scope and the permits match.
